Paula Rodríguez de Sáa (1985), más conocida como Paula Brasaanï es una collagista nacida en Pontevendra que reside en Madrid. Licenciada en ADE y  Máster en Dirección y Gestión de Empresas de Moda, siempre ha tenido inquietudes artísticas y ha dedicado su tiempo libre a experimentar gracias a la fotografía, la estampación o el collage, entre otros. En la actualidad, lo ha dejado todo por cambiar el rumbo a su vida laboral y está formándose en Diseño Floral.

¿Cuándo y por qué comienzas a utilizar el collage en tus obras?
Comienzo a realizar collage hace 5 años. Llevaba un tiempo experimentando con la fotografía tanto analógica como digital y sentí la inquietud de crear algo nuevo y diferente. Viniendo del sector moda, disponía de un montón de revistas en mi casa y fue a partir de ahí cuando todo surgió. Al fin y al cabo, el collage te permite crear universos oníricos. Es como soñar en papel.

¿Cómo es tu proceso creativo? ¿Utilizas otras técnicas?
Mi proceso creativo no es demasiado metódico, depende mucho del momento. Me gusta dedicar mi tiempo libre a pensar en ideas, escribirlas, bocetarlas incluso. Investigo sobre otros artistas, no solo relacionados con el collage; me interesa saber qué está pasando en el mundo del arte.

Dependiendo del tipo de collage trabajo de una forma diferente. Por ejemplo, si se trata de una colaboración, intento empaparme al máximo de la esencia de la marca para que el resultado final tenga un poquito de ambos. Pero si se trata de un proyecto personal, suelo funcionar por sensaciones y dejar fluir mis emociones. Me relaja visionar revistas en busca de material y muchas veces, durante ese proceso, surge la idea de partida. En cambio, en otras ocasiones, voy en busca de imágenes concretas para construir una idea previa.

Durante estos años solo he realizado collage analógico.

¿Qué te aporta el collage que no haga otro tipo herramienta?
La capacidad de crear escenarios y personajes irreales, de plasmar sueños. Valoro en gran medida que es una técnica manual, que nace de mis manos, igual que el Diseño Floral. Para mí el collage es una forma de expresarme con la que me siento muy cómoda y feliz.

¿Cuáles son tus referentes?
Sigo a todo tipo de collagistas, muy diferentes entre ellos: Naro Pinosa, Rocío Montoya, Luca Mainini, Eugenia Loli, Susana Blasco, Pilar Zeta, Randomagus, Douglas Hale, Steven Quinn…pero si tuviera que destacar algo sería un collage de Gregorio Prieto Muñoz, pintor de la generación del 27, que me cautivó desde el primer instante.

También me gusta el trabajo de fotógrafos como Helmut Newton, Ed van der Elsken, Maria Svarbova, Joel Sternfeld, Miles Aldridge, Vivian Maier, Piero Marsili Libelli, David Lachapelle…muy diferentes entre ellos, pero es que mis gustos son un tanto eclécticos.

¿Qué temas suelen aparecer en tus obras?¿Qué te inspira?
La mujer, o elementos que la evoquen, están presentes en la mayoría de mis trabajos. Con ello persigo la exaltación de la femineidad, la sensualidad…en definitiva: la elegancia y belleza femeninas. También hay presencia del mundo floral que me inspira enormemente y que, poco a poco, ha ido cogiendo su sitio en mi vida.

¿Tienes proyectos/colaboraciones cercanos? ¿Futuras exposiciones?
He realizado colaboraciones con dos marcas: VERBENA Madrid, que es una marca de tocados muy originales y pendientes realizados 100% a mano en España, mediante técnicas tradicionales de artesanos españoles.
La otra colaboración la realicé con LLORIA Quilts & Design, que es un proyecto hecho a mano en Galicia, el cual presenta una colección de prendas y accesorios para el hogar realizados mediante la técnica de patchwork.

También estoy siguiendo el proyecto de Collagendario 2018 del colectivo Los Días Contados, en el que todos tenemos el mismo “calendario” con las mismas imágenes y realizamos un collage al día con esa misma imagen. Es increíble la cantidad de collages diferentes que salen a partir de la misma imagen!

En cuanto a proyectos futuros, estoy elaborando mi propio “banco de imágenes” del cual abastecerme. Me están surgiendo nuevas ideas y en las revistas de moda no encuentro las imágenes apropiadas para llevarlas a cabo.
Me encantaría realizar alguna exposición, ya sea individual o colectiva, pero por el momento no se ha dado la oportunidad. ¡Espero que pronto pueda surgir algo!

Paula Rodríguez de Sáa (1985), better known as Paula Brasaanï, is a collagist born in Pontevendra who lives in Madrid. Bachelor in Business Administration and Master in Business Management and Fashion, has always had artistic concerns and has spent her free time to experiment thanks to photography, printing or collage, among others. At present, she has left everything to change the direction to her working life and is studying Floral Design.

When and why do you start using collage in your works?
I start to make collage 5 years ago. I had been experimenting with both analogue and digital photography for some time and felt the concern to create something new and different. Coming from the fashion sector, I had a lot of magazines in my house and it was from there when everything came up. After all, collage allows you to create dream universes. It’s like dreaming on paper.

How is your creative process? Do you use other techniques?
My creative process is not too methodical, it depends a lot on the moment. I like to spend my free time thinking about ideas, writing them, even sketching them. I research other artists, not only related to collage; I am interested in knowing what is happening in the art world. Depending on the type of collage I work in a different way. For example, if it is a collaboration, I try to soak up the essence of the brand so that the final result has a little bit of both. But if it is a personal project, I tend to function by sensations and let my emotions flow. It relaxes me to watch magazines in search of material and many times, during that process, the starting idea arises. Instead, on other occasions, I go in search of concrete images to build a previous idea.

During these years I have only made analog collage.

What does the collage give you that does not make another type of tool?
The ability to create unreal landscapes and characters, to capture dreams. I value to a great extent that it is a manual technique, which is born from my hands, just like the Floral Design. For me, collage is a way of expressing myself with which I feel very comfortable and happy.

What themes usually appear in your works? What inspires you?

Women, or elements that evoke her, are present in most of my works. With it I pursue the exaltation of femininity, sensuality …definitely, feminine elegance and beauty. There is also presence of the floral world that inspires me enormously and that, little by little, has taken its place in my life.

Do you have projects / collaborations nearby? Future exhibitions?
I have made collaborations with two brands: VERBENA Madrid, which is a brand of very original and outstanding headdresses handmade 100%  in Spain, using traditional techniques of Spanish artisans.
The other collaboration was with LLORIA Quilts & Design, which is a handmade project in Galicia, which presents a collection of garments and accessories for the home made using the patchwork technique.

I am also following the project Collagendario 2018 of the collective Los Días Contados, in which we all have the same «calendar» with the same images and make a collage a day with that same image. It’s amazing how many different collages come out of the same image!

As for future projects, I am developing my own «image bank» from which to supply me. New ideas are springing up and in fashion magazines I can not find the appropriate images to carry them out. I would love to make some exhibition, either individual or collective, but for the moment the opportunity has not been given. I hope something can come up soon!
