Andrea García (1989). Nacida en Menorca aunque actualmente vive en Granada. A los 16 años empezó a estudiar Imagen y Sonido, y aunque le gusta mucho el cine y la fotografía, no quiso dedicarse a eso profesionalmente. Por ese motivo, 10 años después,  comienza a estudiar Traducción e Interpretación de alemán. Combina los estudios con el trabajo a media jornada en Ubú Libros, donde aprende mucho, de muchas cosas.

¿Cuándo y por qué comienzas a utilizar el collage en tus obras?

Hice mi primer collage hará menos de un año. Siempre he sentido una gran necesidad por crear, por expresar de alguna manera todo lo que pasa por mi cabeza. No quiero que todo eso se quede dentro, así que tenía que hacerlo tangible de un modo u otro. La fotografía era lo que más conocía pero la cámara me resultaba muy aparatosa y no me encontraba cómoda con ella. Finalmente, @pepa_anguiano me descubre esta técnica y empiezo rápidamente a juntar recortes. Así pues, el collage me alivia esas ansias repentinas por crear. También caigo en la cuenta, de que mi padre ha utilizado siempre esta técnica en sus obras de pintura. Así que pienso que de alguna manera eso ya estaba allí, era cuestión de tiempo exteriorizarlo. Estudiar fotografía me aportó también mucho sentido de la composición.

¿Cómo es tu proceso creativo? ¿Utilizas otras técnicas?

En el día a día suelo estar muy atenta para ver si consigo revistas o fotografías que me puedan servir. Los guardo y los archivo en distintas carpetas según lo que contenga la imagen. Entonces, cuando tengo un día libre o simplemente me apetece, saco todo eso y empiezo a esparcirlos por la mesa y por el suelo. Selecciono una imagen, la que más me atrae en ese momento. Luego intento buscar otras que la complementen o que evoquen algo al unirlas. Lo pego en seguida si tengo claro que esa combinación es la correcta para mí. Si no, lo dejó reposar un par de días hasta que me decido. Algunas veces tardo mucho y otras tardo muy poco, pero normalmente me cuesta bastante decidir cuándo el collage se puede dar por terminado.

Me gusta que la imagen final pueda tener varias interpretaciones, que varíe según la persona que la mire. A veces en el collage, utilizo la pintura. Son solo pinceladas en acuarela o acrílico porque nunca he tomado clases de pintura y no sé mucha técnica en este ámbito.

¿Qué te aporta el collage que no haga otro tipo herramienta?

El collage me aporta facilidad a la hora de crear escenas y situaciones con las que me gustaría encontrarme en el mundo real pero es imposible. Me permite crear ese mundo onírico que imagino. También da mucha libertad para crear tus cosas sin tener que gastarte un dineral en equipo o en materiales. Con solo tener unos recortes, tijeras y pegamento ya lo tienes todo.

¿Cuáles son tus referentes? 

Siempre he visto mucho cine y he seguido la obra de muchos fotógrafos, con lo cual muchos de mis referentes son directores de cine y fotógrafos.

Cuando empecé a hacer collage, me documenté y busqué sobre los collagistas más famosos. Pero es cierto que mis referentes en el collage es la gente de instagram. Suelo coger muchas ideas a través de ellos. Por otro lado, creo que David Lynch sería mi referente total hiciese lo que hiciese.

¿Qué temas suelen aparecer en tus obras? ¿Qué te inspira?

Creo que los temas, en mi caso, se van creando solos, pero es verdad que, inconscientemente, siempre se va repitiendo la misma constante y todos tienen algo en común. Busco en el collage una combinación de forma y fondo. Me gusta que la obra sugiera y que el espectador pueda imaginar lo que le venga en ganas. Yo se lo empiezo y él lo acaba.

De todas formas, creo que los temas que sugieren mis collages son tales como la búsqueda de la identidad, el deseo, la locura, la soledad. El paso del tiempo, las pesadillas y los miedos.

Me inspira el cine, la música, la literatura y los sueños que tengo.

¿Tienes proyectos/colaboraciones cercanos? ¿Futuras exposiciones?

Me gustaría mucho hacer una exposición algún día pero de momento quiero experimentar más y sobre todo sacar más obra.

Hemos hablado con mi amiga @ana.mushell de hacer algo juntas. Ella es ilustradora y por los temas que trata creo que habría mucha consonancia si mezclásemos nuestros trabajos. La intención es abrir un tumblr y hacer allí como una especie de diario a modo de dibujo y collage; contar nuestras historias a través de esas dos técnicas.

Andrea García (1989). When and why do you start using collage in your works?

I made my first collage less than a year ago. I have always felt a great need to create, to express in some way everything that goes through my head. I do not want everything to stay inside, so I had to make it tangible in one way or another. Photography was what I knew most but the camera was very bulky and I was not comfortable with it. Finally, @pepa_anguiano discovers this technique and I quickly begin to collect cuts. So, collage relieves me of those sudden cravings to create. I also realize that my father has always used this technique in his paintings. So I think that somehow that was already there, it was a matter of time to externalize it. Studying photography also gave me a lot of sense of composition.

How is your creative process? Do you use other techniques?

What does the collage give you that does not make another type of tool?

Collage gives me ease when creating scenes and situations that I would like to meet in the real world but it is impossible. It allows me to create that dream world that I imagine. It also gives you a lot of freedom to create your stuff without having to spend a lot of money on equipment or materials. With just a few cuts, scissors and glue you have everything.

Who are your references?

I have always seen a lot of cinema and I have followed the work of many photographers, with which many of my references are film directors and photographers.

When I started doing collage, I documented and searched about the most famous collagists. But it is true that my referents in collage are people from Instagram. I usually get many ideas through them. On the other hand, I think David Lynch would be my total reference no matter what he did.

What themes usually appear in your works? What inspires you?

I think the themes, in my case, are created alone, but it is true that, unconsciously, the same constant is always repeated and everyone has something in common. I look for a combination of form and background in collage. I like that the work suggests and that the viewer can imagine what he wants to do. I start it and the viewer finishes it.

Anyway, I think the themes suggested by my collages are such as the search for identity, desire, madness, loneliness. The passage of time, nightmares and fears.

I am inspired by cinema, music, literature and the dreams that I have.
